Are people doing a good job getting the best and most affordable health care they can?

Most people entering Medicare do not shop for the best rates. They talk to one sales person that only sells for one single Medicare insurance carrier and convinces seniors that their company is the best. Five years down the road that person is paying higher rates than the senior that shopped with an independent broker and found a good rate with a highly rated Insurance agent. Finding the cheapest rate isn’t always the best in the end. Many Medicare Insurance carriers give low rates when seniors are turning 65 only to increase those rates at a higher percentage as the senior ages.

There are a few companies that we cannot name that advertise heavily on TV and really take advantage of seniors when it comes to increasing rates after they sign up. A major part of what we do at Indiana Insurance Alliance is helping seniors who are paying higher rates than the norm for their Medicare supplement. We find seniors a better rate with a different carrier and keeping them on their same plan. Seniors believe they are stuck once they sign up for a Medicare supplement. That is simply not the case. You can change supplements and carriers any time of the year.

The chart below shows basic information about the different benefits Medigap policies cover.

Yes = the plan covers 100% of this benefit
No = the policy doesn't cover that benefit
% = the plan covers that percentage of this benefit
N/A = not applicable

* Plan F also offers a high-deductible plan. If you choose this option, this means you must pay for Medicare-covered costs up to the deductible amount of $2,240 in 2018 before your Medigap plan pays anything.

** After you meet your out-of-pocket yearly limit and your yearly Part B deductible, the Medigap plan pays 100% of covered services for the rest of the calendar year.

*** Plan N pays 100% of the Part B coinsurance, except for a copayment of up to $20 for some office visits and up to a $50 copayment for emergency room visits that don't result in an inpatient admission.
